VON'S VISION FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS

Von's Vision Hosts "Von's Vision Day" at Anchor Center for Blind Children

Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller expanded Von’s Vision community outreach programming by hosting a fall Von’s Vision Day at the Anchor Center for Blind Children on Saturday.  

The spring version of Von’s Vision Day is held at Hellerstein & Brenner. Since 2014, over 600 students have been served through Part I of the spring vision day. Due to the support from foundation supporters, donors and community partners, Von will be able to continue the spring vision day and expand his programming efforts to the fall by bringing the program to the Anchor Center for Blind Children with support from Children’s Eye Physicians, UCHealth and University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.    

Jina Schaff, O.D., a Denver optometrist who has long-served Von’s Vision by facilitating vision exams for new glasses, spoke to the impact of hosting a second Vision Day, “I am thrilled that we are having a second vision screening for the fall as it gives Von and his foundation the opportunity to tap into more children in the Denver community. At the spring Von’s Vision Day, we are able to tap into the southern side of Denver and with this Vision Day at the Anchor Center, we are able to tap into the northern side of Denver therefore making it possible for kids from multiple areas of Denver to come to Von’s Vision Day.”  

Von’s Vision was proud to partner with the Anchor Center for Blind Children, a nationally recognized, private nonprofit agency. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado for 36 years, the Anchor Center for Blind Children is one of only a handful of schools in the country that offers the full range of early intervention, therapy, vision care, and special education services for young children (birth through five) with limited to no sight.  

“It is a testament to the support that we have received from foundation supporters that we are now able to host a vision day in the fall. We will be able to give more kids the gift of sight which is the most important part of why I started Von’s Vision,” said Miller.  

Over 100 students got free eye exams and if needed, fashionable and corrective eyeglasses. Most students that attended Von’s Vision Day on Saturday have never seen an eye doctor or have had their vision tested.  

“We are absolutely thrilled to host Von Miller’s Vision Day. We are aligned with Von’s mission and vision to get children the best eyesight as possible because better eyesight is what opens up opportunities for us – it is tied into our education, recreation, future, friendship and communication. The better these children can see, the better the outcomes are for these children,” said Heather Cameron, Executive Director of Anchor Center for Blind Children.  

But the impact that Von’s Vision creates extends well beyond the provision of prescription frames. Von’s Vision Day is a unique program because it doesn’t just provide low-income children with a pair of glasses – it provides them with inspiration. Von Miller has struggled with poor eyesight his entire life, and he dealt with bullying as a child for having to wear glasses. He knows firsthand the effects that poor eyesight can have on a child, yet he was able to overcome his obstacles and become one of the top football players in the NFL. He is a truly a walking example of how proper vision correction can change your life. Many Denver-area children look up to Miller as a role model and receiving their first pair of glasses from Von’s Vision is a memory that they will never forget.  

A little more than a week after Von will welcome students to Von’s Vision Day at the Anchor Center for Blind Children he is set to host his annual fundraising event Von Miller’s Western Round-Up presented by Andrea and Matt Flanagan., formerly known as Von Miller’s Celebrity Steak-Out, at Mile High Stations and Ironworks.

Proceeds from the event will go towards continuing the community outreach programs of Von’s Vision, including Von’s Vision Day and a soon-to-be-announced new community outreach program, Von’s Vision Center.
