EDGEWOOD, COLO – Thanks to Denver Broncos’ All Pro Linebacker, Von Miller, 146 kids are seeing clearly in the classroom this week.
Wednesday evening Miller was in the Visitor’s Locker Room at Sports Authority Field at Mile High to distribute 146 prescription glasses to children from area Boys and Girls Clubs., Big Brothers Big Sisters and Elevate. The event was called Von’s Vision Reveal and was part two of a program hosted by Miller’s Foundation, Von’s Vision.
“It’s hard to put into words,“ said Miller. “We are just focus on making a difference in one child’s life. One at a time, and before you know it, we’ve touched hundreds.”
Miller, who has been in glasses since he was a child, started Von’s Vision in 2013 with a simple mission: get glasses on kids’ heads.
“Many of these children have never had an exam,” said Jeff Lees, Optician at The Optical Centre of Longmont and member of Von’s Vision Executive Board. “Prescription glasses are going to make a huge difference in their ability to see.”
Attendees were ages 5-19, majority under the age of 13. They were identified through part 1 of Miller’s program held March 14 at Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center. Volunteering their time, a dozen optometrists provided 171 children free eye screenings that day. They identified one attendee with a life threatening disease. 86% of attendees were in need of vision correction. Those children were given full eye exams and fitted for a frame of their choice before leaving the Vision Center.
Over the past month, through the help of generous donors and partners*, Von’s Vision filled the prescriptions and invited the kids back for Von’s Vision Reveal.
In addition to receiving their new prescription glasses at the event, kids also enjoyed a pizza party, photo booth and guided tour sessions of Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Miller was in attendance as well, jumping into photos with the kids in their new frames, signing autographs and just hanging out.
“It’s a true blessing to be in a position to do this,” said Miller. “I’m grateful for everyone involved and I’m grateful for the kids, accepting the glasses and wearing them. Everyone’s going to feel cool after leaving today with a nice new pair of glasses. I feel nothing but excitement thinking about the future of the foundation.”
* Von’s Vision Day and Von’s Vision Reveal was made possible by a host of generous sponsors and volunteers including: Hellerstein & Brenner Vision Center, The Optical Centre of Longmont, Essilor and a frame donor who prefers to remain anonymous.
